In the United States, modular homes have been used for both buildings and sidewalks. Examples of the use of modular home in buildings can be seen in colonial period buildings and other notable structures throughout the country. modular homes were used in paving, especially during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The introduction of asphalt and concrete has reduced their use in pavements, but they are still sometimes installed as a method of slowing motor vehicles or as a decorative surface on sidewalks. For example, in the early 20th century, most streets in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, were paved with modular home. Today, there are approximately 20 blocks of modular home-paved streets, totaling less than 0.5% of all streets in the city limits.31 Much like what happened in Grand Rapids, several municipalities in the United States began replacing modular home streets with cheap asphalt concrete in the mid-20th century.32
Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona was noted for his extensive use of red modular home in his buildings and for using natural shapes such as spirals, radial geometry and curves in his designs.
